EQUALITY INDIA NEWS / A SHAKTI VAHINI RESAERCH INITIATIVE
NEW DELHI AUGUST 8 , 2011
The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) has been extended to building and other construction workers registered with Welfare Boards constituted under the Building and other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act, 1996, street vendors, beedi workers, MNREGA beneficiaries who have worked for more than 15 days during the preceding financial year and domestic workers. It is the endeavour of the Government to extend RSBY to occupational groups in a phased manner. Beginning has been made by selecting the most vulnerable identifiable groups. The scheme has been received well and has been appreciated both within and outside the country. However, considering the scale of the scheme, there are operational issues that emerge from time to time. These issues are resolved through discussions with stakeholders and by issuing necessary instructions.
At present, there is no proposal to modify the provisions under RSBY.
This information was given by the Minister of Labour and Employment Shri Mallikarjun Kharge in reply to a written question whether the Government proposes to bring unorganised sector such as domestic workers, construction and forest workers under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) or introduced any other health insurance scheme specially for these workers in the Lok Sabha today.
